Chevron’s Oil Spills into Salt Lake City Waters

Clean up crews sucking up the spill in Salt Lake City. Photo courtesy of the Salt Lake TribuneSalt Lake City is feeling some of what Gulf Coast residents are feeling today. Late Friday, Chevron’s underground oil pipeline started spilling 50 gallons of crude oil per minute into Red Butte Creek.

This comes as a punch to those who already feel disheartened by the Gulf oil spill. Early this morning a crew responded to the pipeline leak, reducing the flow of the spill to 2-3 gallons per minute. LUSH Cosmetics has partnered with the Rainforest Action Network to fight Canadian Tar Sands Oil. Nationwide, LUSH has recreated their 103 store windows to display scenes of open-pit mining and deforestation. LUSH employees also (at select stores) stripped down, and put on oil “barrels” with the slogan “Time for an oil change, or we’ll lose it all.” The employees handed out pamphlets and asked passer-bys to sign postcards to Obama to end his support of tar sands oil.

Bah Hummerbug!

Following the announcement of the Hummer’s demise, CODEPINK will erect an art installation during the U.S. Social Reform to celebrate the Hummer’s passing. GM announced the wind-down of Hummer operations back in February, ending the production of these military-inspired gas-guzzling vehicles. The Hummer, despised by many environmentalists for the needless waste of oil resources will be receiving a fond farewell in Detroit by CODEPINK, a women initiated grassroots peace and justice group. They will bury a real Hummer and from its ashes will emerge new forms of transportation. This joyous celebration will take place while 20,000 activists will be participating in the U.S. Social Forum. This art installation will be symbolic in welcoming the new clean green economy and the end of violence in the name of oil.

Whaling Woes

The whales are taking a huge blow these days. After almost plummeting into extinction, whale populations bounced back in part thanks to the international whaling moratorium. For 24 years this moratorium put a halt to commercial whaling. Although the moratorium was pivotal in increasing whale populations, it had loopholes. These loopholes allowed the capture and killing of whales for scientific research, which Japan fully utilized. So the killing of whales continued but to the moratorium’s credit, at a very decreased rate.
